Rising signs · the ascendant

The sign that was rising when you were.

At the moment of your birth, one sign of the zodiac was rising on the eastern horizon. It changes about every two hours. Astrologers read it as your way of meeting other people.

What is a rising sign?

Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. It describes how you meet other people: first impressions, style and your natural way of acting. It also decides the houses of your birth chart.

How is it different from my Sun sign?

Your Sun sign is where the Sun was on your birthday. It is the same for everyone born in that month. Your rising sign changes about every two hours, so it is much more personal. It is one reason why two people with the same Sun sign can seem very different.

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not reliably. All twelve signs rise during one day, so even one hour can change it. If you only know the time roughly, try a few times in our calculator. Then you can see if the rising sign stays the same.
