Working with the cycle
What each phase is good for
The Moon’s cycle is the oldest calendar we have. Astrologers use it to plan. They start things while the Moon grows and finish them while it gets smaller.
-
New Moon
Decide what you want to start. This is a quiet beginning, so do not expect results yet.
-
Waxing Crescent
Take the first small steps. Progress is still fragile, so protect it.
-
First Quarter
Deal with the first problem. Decide, commit and act.
-
Waxing Gibbous
Improve and adjust. You are almost there, so edit, practise and prepare.
-
Full Moon
See results, celebrate and let your feelings show. Emotions are strong, and sleep is often worse.
-
Waning Gibbous
Share what you learned and thank the people who helped.
-
Last Quarter
Let go of what did not work. Clear out, forgive and simplify.
-
Waning Crescent
Rest before the next cycle. Do less, on purpose.

How long is a lunar cycle?
About 29.5 days from one new moon to the next. This is called the synodic month. The Moon also changes sign about every two and a half days, so it passes through all twelve signs in each cycle.
What is a void-of-course Moon?
It is the time between the Moon’s last exact angle to a planet in a sign and its move into the next sign. It can last a few minutes or more than a day. Astrologers avoid starting important things at this time, because they often do not develop. It is a good time to rest, tidy and finish things. Prism’s Best days planner includes it.
What is a supermoon?
A full or new moon that happens when the Moon is near its closest point to Earth, called perigee. We use the common definition. The Moon must be at least 90% of the way from its farthest point to its closest point in that orbit. A full supermoon looks up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than a full moon at its farthest point.
Is this the moon phase where I live?
Yes. The phase is the same everywhere on Earth at the same moment. Only the clock time is different. Your browser converts the times on this page to your time zone.
